Selection guide

  1. Axonal injury: NfL (highly sensitive, long half-life) and tau.
  2. Astroglial injury: GFAP and S100B for reactive gliosis.
  3. Neuronal cell body: UCH-L1 as acute neuronal damage marker.
  4. Model specificity: CCI/weight-drop → robust NfL/GFAP release; blast → diffuse axonal injury.
  5. Time course: Sample at 6 h–7 d for peak biomarker elevation; chronic for neurodegeneration.

NfL is the most sensitive and rises earliest/largest in moderate-severe TBI; GFAP peaks earlier in astroglial injury; UCH-L1 is acute neuronal marker.
